" After 3 other PT’s, chiropractors, an orthopedist and a pain specialist, Brooklyn Body Works was a godsend. They were the only ones who took the time and care to listen, figure out and treat my problem ... I will recommend them to anyone I know in need of therapy. Thank you, Matt, Richard, Jason, Mike and Jeanette!"
Tyler S., Brooklyn

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM originated in China 2,000 to 5,000 years ago and is still practiced alongside modern medicine in Chinese hospitals today. TCM has a somewhat different view of illness than Western medicine. Western medicine is focused mainly on symptoms, whereas TCM looks at the body as a whole. In TCM we try to get a sense of how your overall body function is causing changes in body energy that are the root of your symptoms. We treat this imbalance of energy with several modalities: food, acupuncture, bodywork, lifestyle changes and possibly herbs.

Acupuncture treats conditions as varied as gastrointestinal problems, insomnia, stress anxiety, depression, headaches, menopausal symptoms, fertility issues, back pain and other chronic pain.  Acupuncture is also used  for smoking  cessation.

(fig. 1: Needle Technique)

Needles (fig. 1) are one use only, sterile and hair thin. Needles will be placed in areas such as ears, back, abdomen, arms, and legs, depending on the diagnosis and the individual practitioner's style. Typically, 10-20 needles are used in a session. You may feel a sharp prick on insertion, or a pressure; once needles are in you may feel a soreness, a warmth or a sense of movement in the area. Afterwards, you may feel energized or deeply relaxed. Your acupuncturist can develop a treatment plan for you to decide how many sessions you may need.

[fig. 2: Cupping Technique)

Cupping (fig. 2) is an ancient form of folk medicine used for various illnesses and muscle aches. The Chinese originally used animal horns or bamboo cups, but today we use sturdy glass cups which are sterilized prior to use. A lit match or cotton ball is placed inside the cup to create a vacuum and the cup is quickly placed on the back. The vacuum creates a suction on the skin which produces a pleasant sensation similar to bodywork or massage. Sometimes the cups are moved up and down the back for a relaxing effect.
